However, a lot of sitcoms in the 80s..(Growing Pains, Cosby show, Family matters, etc, ) took place either on the east coast or the upper midwest. I lived in Ohio for three years, and looked at a lot of homes to rent in this area.

Most of these homes I looked at, actually resembled the sitcom homes I grew up with….and at a much cheaper price than California I might add!! Almost all of them contained the two staircases, that led from both the kitchen area and the living room, all had a basement (the norm in the midwest), and they were just as spacious and inviting….a little drafty though!

I suspect that the producers of these shows did their homework. There are a lot of mansions in the California area like this as well, but a lot of them are now office buildings.
